So when I commissioned Jak to sketch up this scene of Carver hallucinating a Desire Demon from “In the Shadow of the Gallows”, I knew it was going to be good. But GOD. This. This is amazing.

I love everything about it: The way the demon’s horns blend so easily into Merrill’s halla mask; the drool on Carver’s chin; those dashingly slashed doublet sleeves; the dangling boots; the hand clutching at nothing; the in-turned knees; the stealth bulge; Merrill-demon’s satisfied smirk; and DAT DRESS — oh can we talk about the dress for, like, forever? How the roses look just detailed enough to appeal to a discerning sort of elf, but just gaudy enough to be appropriately Orlesian; and how the train flows like it’s being stirred by secret Fade-winds; and how one day I hope I’m lucky enough to own a pair of gloves just that fits as well as these — I swear, I can just feel the smooth slide of the fabric, can’t you?

And of course: THE MASKS. HOW. JUST. I. AUGH. I CAHN’T JAK. I CAHN’T

Jak (who might very well be a wizard) took this giant jumble of excerpts and photos and unedited brain-barf, some of which I swear I gave to her in actual binary, and somehow, some way, she managed to use it to build a ladder directly into my head, at which point she Marry Poppins’d that shit right up; just as easy as you please, she captured everything I saw as I was writing this and made it even better. Because that’s what Jak does, it’s her Artist Superpower: She sees all the awesome in a scenario or a scene or a character — or even just the potential for awesome — and she magnifies it about a thousand times, until you can see that motherfucker from space.

I could gush about this forever and ever and ever, so in the interest of not taking up all of the Internet, I think I’ll just sit back and stare at Merrill’s shoulders instead. But thank you Jak. This is just incredible. I love it.
